In September, Seafood Watch, which is an arm of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, assigned its worst rating to American and Canadian lobster fisheries because the gear the industry uses can entangle North Atlantic right whales. Then, in mid-November, MSC announced that it was suspending its sustainability certificate for Gulf of Maine lobster because of the threat the industry posed to the whales.
Whole Foods only sells wild-caught seafood from fisheries with high ratings from Seafood Watch or that are certified by the MSC. The grocery will stop buying Gulf of Maine lobster on Dec. 15 but will continue selling its remaining supply of the products.
Whole Foods is not the only food-based business to discontinue sales of Maine lobster. Home meal delivery services Blue Apron and HelloFresh have also pulled the crustacean from their menus, as Patrick Whittle reported for the Associated Press (AP) in September.
Lobsters are harvested year-round in Maine and New Hampshire; however, the majority are caught between late June and late December, when the lobsters are the most active. Lobsters are also harvested during the winter and early spring months but in smaller quantities.
Most lobsters caught between the months of July and late September are typically characterized by a soft shell. These soft shell lobsters are not as strong and are more difficult to transport live. Also, soft shell lobsters tend to have less meat per pound than hard shell lobsters. As such, soft shell lobsters are typically cheaper but most will argue that the meat is deliciously sweet!
Hard shell lobsters tend to be more abundant between mid-September and late November. Their shells are hard because they have yet to molt, and as a result are packed full of delicious meat. Because of this, hard shell lobsters tend to be more expensive.

At a rally in Portland's Old Port on Friday, they protested a federal judge's ruling issue Thursday allowing the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmopsheric Association (NOAA) to impose limits on where and how lobstermen fish in order to protect endangered North Atlantic Right Whales.
Gov. Janet Mills said, \"Regulations that are not based on sound science, not proven fact, and will often pose a risk of devastating Maine's lobster industry. These guys are fed up. I'm fed up. We're all fed up!\"
The rally was also protesting Seafood Watch, a California-based sustainable seafood advocacy group affiliated with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, now reccomending food distributors and restaurants boycott Maine lobster in the name of saving the whales.
\"These people are trying to put this industry out of business. They are telling people all over the country and the world not to buy Maine lobsters!\" said Sen. Angus King. \"These folks never came to Maine. They never went on a boat. They never talked to any lobstermen.\"
Curt Brown, a lobsterman and marine biologist, said, \"Zero documented entanglements of the right whale in Maine lobster gear since 2004, and zero documented mortalities in Maine lobster gear -- ever!\"
Maine lobstermen now mark their rope and have modified their gear, eliminating floating ropes, the kind most prone to entangle right whales, removing 30,000 miles of vertical lines from the water, and increasing the number of traps on the lines left.
NOAA has already imposed seasonal closures barring lobster fishing in 967 square miles of federal waters off the coast of Maine and rules meant to reduce risk to whales, while proposing new speed limits for fishing boats, and laying out a \"roadmap\" to recovery, which promotes the idea of \"ropeless\" fishing.
Seafood Watch and government agencies say vertical lines and ropes are a leading cause of injury and death for the North Atlantic right whale. Maine lobstermen, who've been switching over to breakaway lines to protect the right whale, say that's simply not true.

When Logan Clarke established the Lobster Trap in 1972, he started selling fishing supplies like buoys and traps before moving to fresh, off-the-boat seafood. Clarke's passion for quality was fostered through drives to New Bedford, where he would hand pick the best seafood, and trips up the coast of Maine for the best lobster New England has to offer. Over the course of almost fifty years, what was once a small seaside shanty has grown into to an international operation with four locations and thousands of customers.
Whole Foods said it will stop selling lobster from the Gulf of Maine at hundreds of its stores around the country, citing moves by two sustainability groups to take away their endorsements of the U.S. lobster-fishing industry.
Celebrity Summit to pick up 1,600 live lobsters in Portland todayChellie with John Ready, owner of lobster wholesaler Ready Seafood, in 2012Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said cruise ships are continuing to buy thousands of pounds of live Maine lobster when they visit Maine. Celebrity Cruises has ordered 1,600 11Ž2 pound lobsters for delivery today to the 2,000-passenger Celebrity Summit. That is in addition to 640 lobsters that were purchased last month and another 1,600 more that will be delivered when that ship returns to Portland later this month.\"There is nothing more local than live Maine lobsters caught in the waters off our coast,\" Pingree said. \"I'm glad the cruise ship industry is showing a continued commitment to buying local products when visiting Maine and at the same time giving their guests a chance to enjoy the freshest possible Maine seafood.\"In 2012, when Pingree learned that cruise ships visiting Mainewere not purchasing Maine lobster while in port, she wrote to the CEO's of several major cruise ship companies urging them to buy local. Both Celebrity and Norwegian responded and began purchasing locally.\"It's really just common sense for these cruise ships to stock up on Maine lobster when they are in port, but it wasn't happening until we brought it to the attention of the people who run these companies,\" Pingree said. 59ce067264
